4 Cops Injured, 6 Vehicles Damaged, FIR Registered against 200 People: Nanded Gurudwara Attack

During the Monday’s festive evening, a mob of sword-carrying Sikh protestors broke the barricades and attacked police officials after they were denied the religious procession at Maharashtra’s Nanded Gurudwara in view of the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

Four policemen have been injured. One of the four cops is in critical condition. Several vehicles were damaged during the rampage. The police have detained nearly 18 people in connection with the violence.

Nanded Range DIG Nisar Tamboli told, “Permission for the Hola Mohalla public procession was not granted due to the pandemic. The gurdwara committee was informed and they had assured us that they would abide by our directives and hold the event inside the gurdwara premises.”

He further added, “However, when the Nishan Sahib was brought at the gate around 4 PM, several participants started arguing and over 300 youth stormed out of the gate, broke the barricades and began attacking the policeman.”

DIG Tamboli informed that FIR will be registered at least 200 people under Section 307 (attempt to murder), Section 324 (voluntary causing hurt with dangerous weapons), Section 188 (Disobeying the order of public servant), Section 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and for rioting.

Hola Mohalla is an occasion for Sikhs to demonstrate their martial skills.

Superintendent of Police Pramod Kumar Shewale told that they have talked to the Gurudwara authorities about restrictions in view of the pandemic.

“We had spoken to the gurdwara authorities and the priests and explained the situation to them. So they agreed that this year, no procession will be held and a low-key celebration will be held within the complex,” said SP Shewale.

He further added, “But some of the youngsters got impatient. When Baba-ji explained the situation to them, they moved to the Gate number 1 and started moving on the traditional route of the procession.”
