In a landmark judgment, Allahabad High Court has ruled that adult girls and boys are free to live with the partner of their choice. The court also stated that no one has the right to interfere in their lives.
“Although the Indian Constitution gives everyone the right to adopt the religion of their choice, the conversion is only for marriage,” the court observed.
The court also mentioned that under the Special Marriage Act, the two parties could live a married life without changing their religion, and the law is applicable to all religions. “Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person,” the court said.
The verdict is given by Justice J J Munir while hearing the petition moved by Pooja alias Zoya and Shahvez of Saharanpur. The court has allowed the anti-religion petitioners the freedom to stay anywhere they want.
After finding them, the family placed them under house arrest, which led to this application before Allahabad High Court by the couple.
