Indian High Commission has issued a rejoinder to The Australian Paper in connection to its article highlighting the disaster caused in India by the second wave of coronavirus and handling of the situation by the Modi government.

The India High Commission in Canberra has urged The Australian newspaper to publish a rejoinder.

The High Commission termed the article “completely baseless, malicious and slanderous”. “It appears that the report has been written only with the sole objective of undermining the universally acclaimed approach taken by the Government of India to fight against the deadly global pandemic, at this decisive moment,” said the High Commission of India.

The High Commission has also accused The Australian’s coverage of India’s Covid crisis “motivated and malicious reports” helping in “spreading falsehoods” and urges the paper to “refrain” from publishing “such baseless” articles.

The Australian Newspaper reproduced an article with the title “Modi leads India into viral apocalypse” and shared it with a caption “Arrogance, hyper-nationalism and bureaucratic incompetence have combined to create a crisis of epic proportions in India, with its crowd-loving PM basking while citizens suffocate. This is the story of how it all went so terribly wrong” on April 25.

Criticising the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the complacency, the article took a start with the statement — “I have never seen such huge crowds”. The statement was made during PM Modi’s election rally in Asansol for the West Bengal elections. The article also highlighted the role of Kumbh Mela and election rallies in the disastrous Covid second wave.

India is breaking records with every passing day in terms of spike in the Covid cases.
