A man from Panchkula has been awarded Rs 22,000 as the compensation amount along with partial refund of the payment, after the matrimonial agency failed to find a groom for his daughter and provide promised services.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh has directed the Delhi-based Sycoriaan Matrimonial Services Limited to refund an amount of Rs 64,000 (80% of the fees paid), along with ₹15,000 as compensation for deficiency in services and ₹7,000 as cost of litigation.

Pawan Kumar Sharma, of Sector 21, Panchkula, Haryana had hired Sycoriaan Matrimonial Services Limited to find a groom for his daughter who works at a private bank in Delhi. He hired the agency on May 12, 2017 and paid Rs 80,500 for the services.

The appellant had complained that despite assurance of delivering prompt services, the agency failed to arrange the meetings with the shortlisted matches.

Sharma also said that the agency kept sending profiles which didn’t meet their requirements with shortlisted candidates. He also submitted that he wrote thrice in 2018 to the agency to stop sharing such profiles and sought refund.

However, the agency submitted that they provided 112 suitable profiles over 20 months as per the promised services. As per Sycoriaan Matrimonial Services Limited, Sharma changed their preferences and rejected the shared profiles.

“No credible proofs of the complainant having received and reverting in rejection of all claimed 112 profiles have been produced. It seems that only with a view to dodge this commission, the matrimonial agency has coined this excuse. The harassment suffered by the complainant is also writ large,” the order said.

The order further stated, “Further, by not promptly refunding the amount paid and redressing the customer’s grievance, the agency certainly and definitely indulged in unfair trade practice.”
