Delhi High Court recently held that trial courts ought to give priority to the cases which involve senior citizens and disposed of the plea filed by a senior citizen.

Single judge bench of Justice Pratibha M. Singh made the observations while hearing a plea moved by a 71-year old man against the repeated adjournments given by trial court in connection to his ongoing suit for recovery of possession, arrears of rent etc filed by him against his tenant.

Delhi High Court ordered the trial court suit to be taken up for hearing on February 1.

“No unnecessary adjournments shall be granted at the request of the defendant. An endeavour shall be made to dispose of the suit within eight months from today,” said the Delhi High Court order dated January 25.

The court examined the whole case and noted that the matter is being adjourned the matter time to time. Since February 18, 2019, the case has been adjourned for framing of issues.

“Needless to state, cases involving senior citizens ought to be given some priority by trial courts,” the court ordered.
