After introducing contentious IT rules in 2021, the government prepares another draft seeking more powers to overturn the decisions of social media companies like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Google to suspend, block or delete the accounts of users in case of violations. The Centre government is also seeking powers to issue directions to the social media giants to take down content after a user’s complaint.
The following changes have been mentioned in a draft which introduces a few amendments in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Strangely, the draft has been taken down within a few hours from the website of the IT Ministry after several users shared it over the internet.
The IT Ministry has refused to share much details but has communicated that not much should be read into the removal of the draft, clarifying that it will be “back soon”.
