Delhi High Court judge, Justice Jasmeet Singh was showered with appreciation from lawyers and other judiciary members for leaving the courtroom after 13 hours of hearings. Justice Singh left the virtual courtroom around midnight to complete the hearing of all the listed matters.

The regular working hours for the hearings start at 10.30 am and lasts till 5 pm.

“Can I take the liberty of asking your lordship something? What was your lordship’s sport in college? Was your lordship a marathon runner,” asked senior advocate Dayan Krishnan.

“We all learn from Mr. Mahajan. You party hard, you work hard. Mr. Mahajan’s motto. We are all learning that motto gradually,” responded Justice Singh while referring to ED Counsel Amit Mahajan.

The division bench headed by Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani started hearing the matters from 10.30 am along with Justice Jasmeet Singh till 3 pm. From there on, Justice Singh heard the rest of the matters till 11.30 pm as a single judge bench.

19 matters were listed before the division bench and 40 cases were heard by Justice Singh.

Delhi High Court is on the annual summer vacation. The vacation started on June 5 and will continue till July 3. The vacation bench is taking up all the urgent matters three days a week — Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Who is Justice Jasmeet Singh?

Education

  • Born on February 26, 1968 in Delhi.
  • Schooling from St. Xavier’s School, New Delhi.
  • B.Com (Hons.) from Hindu College of Delhi University
  • Completed LLB in 1992 from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.

Career

  • Enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1992.
  • Practiced civil law in Delhi High Court, subordinate courts, and tribunals.
  • Appointed as standing counsel for Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) in 2013
  • Appointed as standing counsel for Central government in Delhi HC in 2014.
  • Appointed as judge of Delhi High Court on February 22, 2021

Earlier on June 16, Justice Naveen Chawla and Justice Asha Menon had also heard matters till late night.
