Hours after Pakistan defeated India by 10 wickets in the 2021 T-20 World Cup match, videos from Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology in Punjab’s Sangrur district went viral over the internet. Kashmiri students on the college campus were allegedly attacked by students from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana. Four students were reported to be injured during the attack.

In the shared videos, there were broken chairs, upturned beds in the students’ hostel rooms, and some photos of the injured people. Similar incidents were claimed to be reported in Rayat Bahra University in Kharar.

“We were watching the match here. UP waale barged in. We came here to study. We are also Indian. You can see what was done to us. Are we not Indians? So what does Modi say?” said a Kashmiri student in the shared video.

Cheered Pakistan Win

“There are about 90 Kashmiri students and around 30 students from UP and Bihar in the college. Kashmiri students stay in 2 wings of the hostel. While the match was on, the students cheered when Pakistan was hitting runs. They also raised azadi slogans,” said a senior police official.

J&K Students Association President Seeks Arrests

“Kashmiri students who were assaulted in Sangrur and Kharar Mohali told me that they were rescued by the locals and other Punjabi students. Students from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana had barged into their rooms, thrashed them and went on a rampage,” tweeted Nasir Khuehami, the national spokesperson J&K Students Association.

“Such incidents have increased the sense of insecurity and anxiety among Kashmiri youth studying and working outside as well as among their parents and relatives in Kashmir. We demand immediate arrest of all those involved in the assault on Kashmiri students and ensure adequate arrangements for safety, security of our students. The attack on Kashmiri students by some goons is a worrying factor for the students,” said another tweet from him.

Another video was doing rounds on the internet in which MBBS and PG students of SKIMS Medical College Srinagar, Kashmir were allegedly seen celebrating the Pakistan win.

It was not only the two countries themselves who were passionately waiting for Sunday’s T-20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan, but cricket fans from around the world were excited about that match.

History was made yesterday as Pakistan has beaten the ghosts of 29 years by defeating India by 10 wickets. This was the first time in history (T20 or 50-over World Cup) that India lost to Pakistan.

The incidents reported after that match are really heart-breaking. There is no place for such violence and hate in sports. This should come to an end.
