Marking one more loss during the ongoing farmers’ protests, a lawyer from Punjab’s Jalalabad committed suicide on Sunday by consuming poison near the farmers protesting site at Tikri border. He was declared dead on arrival while taken to the hospital.

The deceased identified as Amarjit Singh from Punjab consumed a poisonous substance on Sunday and left a suicide note. He was taken to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak where he was declared dead on arrival.

In the purported suicide note, Amarjit Singh cited the reason behind taking this drastic step and stated that he was sacrificing his life in support of the farmers’ agitation against the recently introduced three farm laws by the Centre government so that the government is compelled to listen to the voice of the people.

He further added in the suicide note that the common people like farmers and labourers are feeling defrauded due to three black agriculture laws and “the worst life is inevitable”.

The police is verifying the authenticity of the recovered suicide note dated December 18.

“We have informed the relatives of the deceased and once they reach here their statements will be recorded and further proceedings will be conducted,” said a police officer from Jhajjar district.

A Sikh preacher from Punjab, Sant Ram Singh committed suicide at the Singhu border earlier this month citing the reason that he cannot bear the pain of the farmers.

Another farmer aged 22 from Bhatinda, Punjab committed suicide after returning from the protesting site.

Last week, a 65-year old farmer committed suicide at the Singhu border by consuming a poisonous substance.

Thousands of farmers from various states especially from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are protesting against the three agriculture laws — Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.
