On 3 January 2020, the lawyers at Madras HC had staged protests against the recent Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and National Register of Citizens stating that CAA humiliates people based on their religion.

Around 250 advocates including senior advocates Nalini Chidambaram, Vaigai, Kannadasan, Ramalingam, etc. took part in the protests. They formed a human chain to protest the controversial CAA and NRC which was led by senior advocates from the High court premises. They carried placards showing “Defend the Constitution of India,” “I am an Indian Citizen,” “A Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic,” “Equality & Fraternity,” and various others. The protest included reading out the preamble of the Indian Constitution.

The advocates protesting stated that forming the human chain is to pledge their commitment to defend the constitution of India and further asserted their citizenship of India based on constitutional values.

One of the protesting advocates stated that “As lawyers, we must stand on the frontlines in the battle to defend and protect our constitution. We pledge to fight against all assaults on the basic structure of our Constitution.”

Earlier, the Madras High Court denied staying a rally proposed by the opposition party against CAA-NRC, stating that it the right of the citizens.
