President Ram Nath Kovind has nominated senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani to the Rajya Sabha seat vacated after the death of MP Raghunath Mohapatra last month. He is nominated for his legal expertise under Article 80 of the Constitution of India.

Mahesh Jethmalani is the son of eminent Indian lawyer Ram Jethmalani who served as India’s Union minister of law and justice, as chairman of the Indian Bar Council, and as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Mahesh Jethmalani was born in 1960. He completed his Bachelor’s degree from St Xavier’s college and his Masters of Arts from Oxford University.

He studied law in London under the aegis of the UK Bar and qualified as a barrister in 1980. He enrolled at the bar on 12th February 1981.

He was designated as the senior advocate in 2004.

In the 40 years long legal career, he handled many high-profile civil and criminal cases including trials and appeals of former Maharashtra CM A R Antulay and PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination case.
