The protesters from the Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh have reportedly sent letters to the Chief Justice of India, seeking to abrogate the implementation of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.
Earlier, on 22 January, the Supreme court had issued a notice on all matters, which challenged the validity of the CAA and granted four weeks to the Centre to respond to the pleas against the Act. The court further confirmed that it will not grant any stay on the implementation of the amended Citizenship Act, without hearing the Centre.
Ever since the Government of Uttar Pradesh detained over 80 people in December 2019 for protesting against the Act, the citizens who were reluctant to raise their voice. Thus, they have taken the initiative to write to the CJI.
As per reports, a resident of Nagina town in Bijnor, Sharique said that “There was nobody to lead people, so we decided to take this initiative of drafting the letters to the CJI. We cannot just sit quietly.” He further went door to door to raise support for the letters, however, many of them refused to sign his letter thinking that he was a government official who has come to collect data for the National Population Register.
“People don’t want to experience that fear again. If we will also get afraid, who will eliminate this fear?” stated Sharique.
