Home » News » SC Directs Transfer of MLA Mukhtar Ansari from Punjab to UP’s Banda Jail


After a long drawn war between Punjab and Uttar Pradesh government, Supreme Court on Friday has ordered the transfer of gangster-turned-politician, Mukhtar Ansari from the jail of Punjab to Uttar Pradesh. The apex court directed the authorities to make the arrangement within two weeks and make sure that he faces the trials in Uttar Pradesh.

A division bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice R Subhash Reddy issued the directions to transfer Ansari from a jail in Rupnagar, Punjab to Banda Jail in Uttar Pradesh within two weeks.

The apex court has also rejected the pleas filed by Ansari seeking transfer of cases against him to Delhi.

Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government had moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to Punjab government to hand over the custody of Mukhtar Ansari immediately.

Mukhtar Ansari is the sitting MLA of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) from Mau seat in Uttar Pradesh. Initially, he was lodged in Banda jail when he was undertrial. Then, Punjab police obtained a production warrant against him over a complaint of extortion and criminal intimidation.
