At a time when the second phase of unlocking kickstarted across the country with restrictions being relaxed, the Mumbai Police on Wednesday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, in the city, considering the alarming increase of COVID-19 situation.
Although Section 144 pertains to any gathering of more than five persons, the order issued by the Mumbai Police said: “All movement of one or more persons in the areas designated as containment zones by the municipal authorities is prohibited except for essential activities, the supply of essential goods and medical emergencies.”

“All movements of one or more persons in the city are prohibited between 9 PM and 5 AM, except for following,” read the prohibitory orders issued by the Mumbai’s Deputy Police Commissioner Pranaya Ashok.
Here are the exemptions from the night curfew
- Emergency services
- Government officials on duty
- Food, vegetable, milk, grocery
- Medical emergencies
- Media
- Ports
- Home delivery
On the other hand, the movement of persons for non-essential activities such as shops, markets, barbershops, spas, and outdoor physical activities, among others, shall be permitted within “nearby/neighborhood areas” only, the order reads. Long-distance travel for a non-essential purpose will not be permitted.
As on Wednesday, Mumbai has reported around 77,658 confirmed cases of COVID-19, while 4,556 have succumbed to death due to the disease.
