On Friday, Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Punjab police have raided two more places to nab the former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini facing arrest in the 1991 Multani abduction and murder case. The raid was conducted in his house in Sector 10-A, Chandigarh, and his native village Khuda Krala in Hoshiarpur.
Earlier on Wednesday, the SIT officials have reportedly conducted a raid in several places including Hoshiarpur and Mohali in Punjab, Dabwali and Sirsa in Haryana as well as in Delhi. Also, the officials have conducted another raid in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had dismissed his plea seeking anticipatory bail. The court also declined the second petition which sought quashing of the FIR and transfer of investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The bench headed by Justice Fatehbad Singh while dismissing the plea, stated, “In the light of the seriousness of offences that have come about there being every likelihood of petitioner stifling fair investigations and for which custodial interrogation of the petitioner is very much essential to piece together this unfortunate incident”.
“Both petitions of the former DGP have been dismissed by the high court,” Punjab Police special public prosecutor Sartej Singh Narula told.
Earlier, two judges, Justice Suvir Sehgal and justice Amol Rattan Singh had recused to hear the plea.
Ex-DGP of Punjab, Sumedh Singh Saini was booked in May in connection to the alleged kidnapping and murder of Balwant Multani, a junior engineer with the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporation (Citco) in 1991. Multani was picked by Sumedh Singh Saini after a terrorist attack on Saini.
The police had booked Sumedh Singh Saini under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code after the two accused, former UT police inspector Jagir Singh and former ASI Kuldeep Singh, turned approver in the Multani’s disappearance case. Saini is absconding leaving behind the Z security.
Following the complaint registered in Mataur police station by Balwant Multani’s brother, Palwinder Singh Multani, the police had booked Sumedh Singh Saini and six others in the abduction and murder case.
They were booked under the Section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), Section 344 (wrongful confinement), Section 330 (voluntarily causes hurt), and Section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
