Supreme Court on Wednesday has allowed the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to resume its administrative operations and start passing orders in connection to the 174 reserved cases. The regulatory commission has not held any hearing since August 28.

The apex court issued the directions to begin the administrative operations as the law member has been appointed. The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet accepted the proposal for the appointment of Pravas Kumar Singh, legal member of Jharkhand SERC as a law member to CERC. He has been appointed for a period of five years.

The adjudicatory work by the two members of CERC – I S Jha, former Power Grid Corp chairman, and Arun Goyal, ex-bureaucrat, will only begin after the SC-appointed law member will join. Both the members were asked to go on leave till the time a law member is appointed.

“Hon’ble SC has accepted my successions to let both the members resume their and perform administrative functions but adjudicatory functions will commence once member (law) joins the office,” stated advocate-on-record Ravi Sharma.

Various industry experts are welcoming the decision as a relief as CERC will clear all the pending cases till the time the law member will join.
