Supreme Court today refuses to grant the parole to Haryana’s self-employed Baba Rampal to attend his granddaughter’s wedding. He was convicted in murder charges and has awarded life imprisonment in 2018.

Three judges bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justices R Subhash Reddy, and AS Bopanna was hearing the plea and declined it.

The petitioner argues that he is an elderly person in his family and his presence in marriage is very important being the grandparent to perform the ritual for the marriage along with his granddaughter.

On October 17, 2018, Rampal was convicted in murder charges and sentenced life imprisonment along with his 13 followers in second murder case registered in Barwala police station in Hisar, Haryana on November 19, 2014.

Self-styled Rampal and his followers were convicted under the charges of wrongful confinement, murder, and criminal conspiracy.

On November 19, 2014, a woman was found dead in his ashram and he was awarded life imprisonment in murder charges on October 16, 2018. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment for the conviction in death of four women and a child in his ashram in Hisar.

After working as an engineer in the Haryana government department for 15 years, he quitted his job in May 1995. He later set up two separate ashrams in the Barwala area in Hisar and Rohtak districts and gained popularity as a spiritual leader with the passage of time.
