Supreme Court has imposed an exemplary cost of Rs 10,000 for claiming that he had developed medicine for the COVID-19.

Haryana-based Omprakash Vaid Gyantara has made the claims of developing a COVID-19 cure and has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking directions for all the doctors, hospitals across the country to use the medicine.

Gyantara, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) has filed a PIL seeking directions to Secretary, Health Department, Government of India, to use the medicine that he has developed. His plea claimed that he has developed a desi version of medicine for the deadly coronavirus.

The bench, headed by Justice Sanjay K Kaul also comprising of Ajay Rastogi and Aniruddha Bose, noted that the directions sought in the PIL were completely misconceived and that it was time to send a message that people should not approach a court with such contentions.

The bench further stated that the primary consideration of the petitioner in filing such a petition seemed to be getting some attention and publicity.

“We are of the view that such kind of petitions must be stopped as anybody and everybody thinks they have some cure for the situation. Such petitioners seek to invoke the jurisdiction of this Court under Article 32 of the Constitution, possibly only to gain some publicity observed the bench,” observed the bench.

Observing that such wastage of judicial time is completely inappropriate, the bench has disposed of the plea with imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 and has directed the petitioner to deposit the Advocates-on-Record Welfare Fund within four weeks.
