The Supreme Court has today agreed to consider the pleas challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act after Holi vacation i.e. after 15 March.
The bench comprising of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant has allowed the request made by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) through their Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal, list the matters challenging the validity of CAA for an urgent hearing. The counsel Sibal has also stated that till date, the Centre has not filed any reply in the matter. Meanwhile, Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the Centre mentioned that the Centre would file its reply in the matter in two days.
Subsequently, the court stated that it would take up the pleas after the Sabarimala matter. To this, Sibal pointed out that “If matter related to CAA is listed after Sabarimala, it won’t come up before April.” He further asserted that the CAA case needs to be heard only for two hours, so as to provide interim relief.
Thus, the bench agreed to consider Sibal’s request and gave liberty to mention the case after the Holi break.
The top court will be closed for a week for Holi from March 9 to March 15.
Over a hundred petitions have been filed in the apex court for and against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
