Two days back, it was reported that Mahjabeen Hakimi, a member of Afghanistan’s young women’s national volleyball team has been beheaded by the Taliban militants for not following Sharia law.

Mahjabeen was a part of the Hazara Ethnic Group, a minority ethnic group reviled and persecuted by the Taliban. The persecution was allegedly done in early October but didn’t get media attention as the family was threatened. Many women players fled the country after the assassination of a player in August. But, Mahjabeen was unfortunately left behind.\

However, the allegations are reported to be false stating that the Taliban has no role in the killing of Mahjabeen as she died 10 days before Afghanistan take over. It is being alleged that the player had committed suicide.

The brutal crimes reported in Afghanistan raise questions over the security of religious minorities in the country.
