Following massive protests in the Chandigarh University campus of Punjab’s Mohali district, the police has arrested three persons in connection with the alleged leak of intimate videos of over 60 girls from the hostel. The videos were allegedly recorded while the girls were taking a bath in their hostel.

Massive protests broke out at the Chandigarh University campus on Saturday and continued till 2 am Monday. Students ended their protests after they were assured by the state administration and police of a fair investigation. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also ordered a high level probe into the matter.

The three persons who were arrested include the female student who is accused of recording and sharing obscene videos of girls from the Chandigarh University hostel, her 23-year-old boyfriend Sunny Mehta and a 31-year-old man. All three accused are from Rohru, Himachal Pradesh.

Rohru police has taken the two men into custody after receiving a request from Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav and would hand them over to Punjab police.

“Himachal Pradesh Police has reacted to the request of Punjab Police with sensitivity and professionalism. We nabbed the accused,” said Himachal Pradesh DGP Sanjay Kundu.

Chandigarh University has suspended the two wardens of the hostel.

Don’t Spread Rumours, Urges Punjab Police

While talking to the media, Punjab police informed that only four videos have been found on the phone of the accused woman. The police stated that all four videos are of herself only which she had shared with her boyfriend. Her phone has been seized and sent for forensic analysis. The police has registered an FIR under Section 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

The police also refuted the claims of girls committing suicide. The police stated that no one has attempted to commit suicide. As per the police, the girls were fainting because of the suffocating environment during the protests.

It was claimed that 8 girls have attempted to commit suicide which was denied by the University authorities and police.

However, the protesting students have refused to accept the police findings that there is no prima facie evidence that the female accused had shared videos of other girl students from the varsity.

All the rumors of objectionable videos shot of other girl students are totally false and baseless,” RS Bawa, Pro-Chancellor, Chandigarh University has said.
