Ghaziabad police have arrested the main accused in the crematorium roof collapse case in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Three people had already been arrested in connection to the mishappening. The police had announced a ₹25,000 reward on the contractor of the crematorium, Ajay Tyagi.

The three accused arrested on Monday include Muradnagar Nagar Palika Executive Officer Niharika Singh, Junior Engineer Chandra Pal, and Supervisor Ashish.

On Sunday, over 25 people were killed and 15 people were injured in a mishap where roof of a crematorium collapsed. Almost 60 people were attending the funeral rites of the deceased fruit seller, Jai Ram at Ukhlarsi cremation ground. People took shelter under the crematorium roof to save themselves from getting drenched as it was raining and the roof of the crematorium collapsed.

The police have registered a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 337 (causing hurt to any person by doing any act rashly or negligently as to endanger human lives), Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Indian Penal Code.

The authorities have set up a two-member committee to investigate the incident after the families of the victims took to the streets to protest. They had blocked the Delhi-Meerut highway with two dead bodies demanding to increase the compensation amount.

After hours of protest, they cremated the bodies following the announcement of ₹10 lakh compensation and a government job for each victim’s family by the Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja.

Two months back, Muradnagar Municipality had given Ajay Tyagi a contract to renovate the crematorium for ₹55 lakh. The crematorium for the public 15 days back.

Earlier, state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath  had announced ₹2 lakh as financial relief for the families of the deceased. The ones who are injured will also be provided some relief after assessing their level of handicap.
