The Supreme Court today has directed to produce the former leader of Indian National Congress, Sajjan Kumar before a board of doctors from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at 10.30 am on Thursday, for a medical examination.
The bench comprising of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant stated that “Whether or not the convict needs to be institutionalized, will be decided once the report of the Board by the AIIMS doctor comes in’ and further directed the AIIMS doctor to submit their report within a week.
Sajjan Kumar, an accused in the in a case relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on 17 December 2018. Reportedly, he was convicted of killing around five Sikhs in Delhi Cantonment’s Raj Nagar area on November 1-2 during 1984 anti-Sikh riots, that broke out after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards. Kumar was also found guilty for burning down a gurdwara in Raj Nagar.
Subsequently, Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for Sajjan Kumar, sought immediate interim bail claiming that Kumar is seriously ill adding that his health was not improving. Further, the apex court, said that he should be presented before the AIIMS hospital board tomorrow.
