During Friday’s prayers, a controversy erupted in Jamia Masjid after some men allegedly shouted Azadi slogans. Srinagar police have arrested a person involved in sloganeering and are questioning others.

“Today afternoon there were Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid wherein a huge number of gatherings took place, around 24 to 25 thousand persons attended the Friday prayers. After the culmination of prayers about 25 youths started anti-national sloganeering for a while. There was also an altercation between these youths and the volunteers of the intezamia committee of Jamia masjid. This created a situation of ruckus inside the mosque. Later they were dispersed from the mosque. A case in this regard was registered in Nowhatta under FIR no 16/2020 under sections 124A and 447 of IPC,” said a media report.
It further stated, “Raids were conducted at different locations and the main instigator of the sloganeering namely Basharat Nabi Bhat S/o Gh Nabi Bhat R/o Hawal, Nowhatta was apprehended and formally arrested in the case. Many more suspected youths have been called for questioning and will be formally arrested as soon as their role comes forth in this case. It also came out that the main accused had received instructions from Pakistan based handlers of terror outfits to disrupt Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid and cause law and order situation.”
Jamia Masjid is one of the biggest mosques in Kashmir.
A video of the incident was shared on the internet and is getting viral.
In addition to the chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘Naara-e-Takbeer’, they could also be heard shouting Azadi slogans and hailing Zakir Musa.
Zakir Musa was the Chief of the terrorist group Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind and was killed by the Indian Army in an encounter in May 2019.
People were also heard raising slogans that called for secession from India.
The incidents of stone-pelting were also reported outside the mosque where personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force were deployed to maintain the law and order.
