Calcutta High Court has sought a status report from the West Bengal Home Secretary over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ by September 19. The bench has also directed the Kolkata police to not “illegally” detain any person and ensure that there was no damage to public property.

BJP has initiated a massive protest march ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ to the state secretariat where a number of policemen and leaders were injured. The party workers arranged special trains after police had barricaded the main road to reach the secretariat. The protest was staged against the alleged corruption by the ruling Trinamool Congress government.
Different parts of Kolkata including Howrah station, Lalbazar and MG Road turned into a battlefield during those protests. Several videos of the protests went viral where the mob was seen beating and thrashing police. One police vehicle was also set on fire.
Reportedly, as the mob turned violent, the police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. Lathicharge was also used to prevent violence.
