Among several bad incidents of 2020, Hathras rape and murder case was the most horrible one. A 19-year old Dalit girl was brutally raped on September 14, 2020. The girl went to farm to collect fodder for their animals. The four accused dragged her with her dupatta and then raped her. She got a serious spinal injury and was paralyzed. Her tongue was also cut off.
Her third statement was recorded on 22 September. She took her last breath on September 29 in Safdarjung hospital of Delhi. Various questions were raised over the midnight cremation of the victim’s body by UP police. Her body was cremated at 2.30 AM using petrol.
Yogi Adityanath led UP government faced a lot of flak from the public for the way this matter was handled and the midnight cremation. The family of the deceased stated that the cremation was done forcibly without the consent of the woman’s family and they were locked in their house during the cremation.
Allahabad High Court took the suo moto cognizance of the matter and asked the victim’s family, the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police to appear before the court.
In October, the Supreme Court asked the Allahabad High Court to monitor the probe conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Earlier, this week, the CBI sought more time from Allahabad High Court to conclude the investigation. After which the court has scheduled the next date of hearing as January 27.
