The Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad, on 12 February, has called for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ (all-India strike) for 23 February against the honorable apex court ruling that said, reservation in promotion for the public posts could not be claimed as a fundamental right.
Earlier, on 7 February, the Supreme Court refused to issue a direction to the Uttarakhand state government to provide reservation to SC/ST candidates in fulfilling vacancies, stating that quota in jobs is not a fundamental right.
“No mandamus can be issued by the court directing the state government to provide reservations,” observed the Supreme Court.
Subsequently, on 11 February, Azad filed a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking a reversal of its 7 February order. As per sources, he announced a protest march in Delhi, from Mandi House to Parliament on 16 February, along with a nationwide agitation, on 23 February.
Reportedly, he urged the Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, to build pressure on the government to bring an ordinance to nullify the ruling.
