The Delhi High Court today has issued a notice to the Centre, seeking its response on a plea that sought a court-monitored probe into the police repression at Jamia Millia Islamia University on 15 December 2019.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar was hearing a petition filed by an LLM student at Jamia University, Muhammad Minhajuddin, who had reportedly lost vision for one of his eyes in the violence that took place between the students and the police on 15 December, last year at Jamia Millia Islamia University. The bench issued a notice to the Centre, Delhi government and police seeking their stand on the plea.
The petitioner has further sought for registration of an FIR against the police personnel involved in the incident and for compensation proportionate with the injury suffered by him, to bear expenses of his treatment and to provide him a permanent job commensurate with his qualifications. He has further sought a court-monitored probe by a committee or a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged police atrocities.
On 15 December last year, a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 near Jamia turned violent, with demonstrators pelting stones at police and setting public buses and private vehicles on fire. Reportedly, the police stormed inside the university campus to nab ‘outsiders’ who were involved in arson.
