The controversial Uttar Pradesh doctor, Kafeel Khan who was accused of giving a provocative speech on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, during a speech in Aligarh Muslim University, last month was arrested in Mumbai on 29 January night, by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
As per sources, an FIR was registered against him on 13 December, which stated that he attempted to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere at the university and disturb communal harmony. Subsequently, the UP Special Task Force detained him with the assistance of Mumbai Police when he arrived at the Mumbai airport to attend anti-CAA protests at Mumbai Bagh which was scheduled on Thursday.
“Officials of the UP Special Task Force arrested Dr. Kafeel Khan in a case which was registered at Civil Lines Police Station under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Indian Penal Code. Our police team helped our UP counterparts on their request,” stated an official of Mumbai Police.
A pediatrician, Kafeel in 2017 was suspended and jailed for his alleged role in the deaths of over 60 children, at a government hospital in Gorakhpur, due to the alleged oxygen shortage. He was removed from the post of the nodal officer at the state-run BRD hospital after 40 kids died in two days. He was later arrested. However, in September 2019, the UP government cleared him of all the major accusations and gave him a clean chit.
