Falling into another trouble, a fresh FIR has been filed against the Republic TV Editor-in-Chief, Arnab Goswami, for allegedly manhandling a woman police officer on duty during his arrest on Wednesday.
The journalist has been booked under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), Section 506 (criminal intimidation), and Section 34 (acts by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Goswami’s wife and son have also been booked under Section 353 of IPC for obstructing the public servant from performing their duty.
Making headlines on Wednesday, Mumbai police move to arrest journalist Arnab Goswami has led to a huge partition of supporters and opponents. The journalist was arrested by the Mumbai police in connection to the suicide of an interior designer, Anvay Naik, and his mother. Arnab Goswami was accused of abetment of suicide.
Two unknown persons named Feroz Shaikh and Nitesh Sarda has also been booked.
A court in Alibaug has rejected his assault allegations against the Mumbai police and has sent him to 14 days of judicial custody.
In 2018, Anvay Naik, an interior designer by profession, left a suicide note saying that he and his mother are taking this extreme step on account of payments due worth Rs 83 lakh to them not being cleared by the three owners – television journalist Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/Skimedia and Niteish Sarda of Smartworks.
In the lack of evidence, Raigad police had closed the case in April 2019. However, the deceased Naik’s daughter had again approached the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh to reopen the case.
Bombay High Court will hear his petition alleging illegal arrest by Mumbai police today.
