The Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb has on 10 March ordered a magisterial probe into the ‘mysterious’ death of a lawyer, after visiting the residence of the deceased.
A 30-year-old lawyer, Bhaskar Deb Roy was found lying unconscious outside a school at Dhaleswar, on Friday. His motorbike had allegedly met with an accident, leaving him injured. Although the fire service personnel took him to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala, Roy died within a few hours.
However, Roy’s family members, as well as advocates, have alleged that he died due to medical negligence as he was left unattended at the hospital and also suspected a foul play in the alleged accident.
Subsequently, a large number of lawyers staged a demonstration in front of the police headquarters seeking a proper investigation into the death. They also held a candlelight vigil in the city. Although the police were initially reluctant to register FIR on a charge of medical negligence, they later relented after receiving an order from the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
CM Biplab Kumar Deb, during his visit to Mr. Roy’s residence assured the grieving family members of all possible help from the government and stated that the West Tripura District Magistrate would probe the issue.
The Health Department has also constituted a four-member team to look into the alleged negligence committed in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Tripura High Court bench headed by Chief Justice Akil Qureshi on Tuesday began hearing a PIL plea seeking the court’s intervention for a high-level probe into the advocate’s death. The bench has reportedly asked the police to submit all relevant documents by today, to resume the hearing.
