A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions for the CBI probe into the mysterious death case of Sushant Singh Rajput to be completed within two months while citing that the agency has acted ‘irresponsibly’ in the investigation.
The plea filed by a Mumbai resident Puneet Kaur Dhanda and her husband, Advocate Vineet Dhanda questioned the ‘silence’ on part of the Central Bureau of Investigation regarding the status of its probe into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. The plea contends that almost four months had passed by after a top court bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy had given a seal of approval to the Bihar government’s recommendation for a CBI probe but as of now, the CBI has not put forth any developments regarding the status of the case in the public domain.
“This Hon’ble Court posed serious faith in the most premium investigative agency of our country and directed an investigation in the unnatural death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput as the death of the actor shook the entire country and even the fans abroad got a setback due to untimely and unnatural death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. This Hon’ble Court passed an order for CBI inquiry on 19th August 2020 and despite lapsing of almost four months the Central Bureau of Investigation is yet to conclude its investigation and all the eager family members, fans, well-wishers of the late actor are yet to get a solace regarding the exact reason of the death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput,” read the plea.
The petition alleges that the CBI is “not acting in a responsible manner in the present case and there is a delay in the conclusion of the investigation of the case.”
“Even in serious offenses like murder the law stipulates filing of charge sheets in ninety days but in the present case the premium investigating agency has failed miserably in their role and the unnecessary delay in the present case is bringing bad name to the administration of justice not only in our country but across the globe,” added the plea.
It said that Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead under mysterious circumstances and the probe was initially conducted by Mumbai Police. However, on dissatisfaction being shown by the family of the late actor this Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct an inquiry in the mysterious death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the plea said.
Further, the PIL said that a fair, competent, impartial, and speedy investigation is the need of the hour.
Rajput, 34, who made his silver screen debut in the critically acclaimed “Kai Po Che” seven years ago, was found dead in his apartment in suburban Bandra in Mumbai on June 14.
The CBI had taken over the probe from Bihar Police into the alleged abetment to suicide case filed by the actor’s father KK Singh in Patna against Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and her family. An FIR was registered against her in Patna at a time when the Mumbai Police was conducting a probe into Rajput’s death.
On July 30, Chakraborty moved the Supreme Court seeking transfer of the case lodged against her while stating that the FIR in Patna alleging abetment to suicide charges against her was nothing but an act of ‘connivance’ between the State of Bihar and the father of the late Sushant Singh Rajput.
