Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Wednesday presented the Journalist of the Year Award posthumously to Reuter’s photojournalist late Danish Siddiqui. The award was received by his wife Frederike Siddiqui.

CJI was a keynote speaker at the Red Ink Awards 2021 and applauded all the journalists who have dedicated their lives to keep the spirit of journalism alive.

Danish Siddiqui died in Afghanistan in July during the Taliban uprising. CJI Ramana said that Siddiqui was a man with a magical eye and was rightly regarded as one of the foremost photo-journalists of this era.

He went on to praise his work stating if a picture can convey a thousand words, his photos were novels.

He also stated that journalism is a tough and risky job. He added that the unfortunate death of Siddiqui in Afghanistan brought the issue of journalist safety protocols and the protection of journalists in conflict zones.

Mumbai Press Club had also awarded him the Journalist of the Year Award 2020 for his investigative and impactful news stories covering Rohingyas, anti-CAA protests, migrant labourers plight during pandemic, farmers protest, and Afghanistan civil war.

CJI also congratulated Prem Shankar Jha for winning “Lifetime Achievement Award”. He also paid tribute to the journalists who lost their lives during the pandemic.
