A visually impaired lawyer, Suraj Singh has been sitting on a dharna (sit-in protest) outside Jammu and Kashmir High court against the alleged government failure to implement disability laws in the Union Territory.

He stated that he is protesting at the Jammu wing of the J&K High Court towards the redressal of issues and enforcement of the rights recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

He alleged, “I have already agitated about the issues before the competent authorities of J&K from time to time, but till date am being harassed through their adopting a lackadaisical approach in implementing the RPWD Act.”

He has been practicing in the Jammu wing of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh since 2011. Suraj alleged that he has been fighting for his rights which are held by the Supreme Court in Union of India & Anr vs National Federation of Blinds & Ors. decision.

Jammu Bar Association President, MK Bhardwaj has written a letter to the Secretary in the Department of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, seeking Suraj Singh’s appointment as a government advocate in the High Court.
