During a press conference at the presidential palace on Monday, Prime Minister Hassan Diab has announced the resignation of the whole cabinet after the deadly Beirut explosion last week. About 160 people are found dead with 6,000 injured and the estimated damage is approximately $10 billion to $15 billion.
Lebanon was already struggling with the economic and political crisis and after last week’s massive explosion in Beirut, the agony has increased even more.
“I declare today the resignation of this government. May God protect Lebanon. He was taking a step back so that he can stand with the Lebanese people and fight the battle for change alongside them,” said PM Diab on Monday.
Diab has also blamed corrupted predecessors over this tragedy and said, “They (political class) should have been ashamed of themselves because their corruption is what has led to this disaster that had been hidden for seven years.”
“Their corruption created this tragedy. Between us and change stands a thick wall protected by their dirty tactics,” added Diab.
Diab told that he is stepping down to support the movement for change and said that today we are heeding the people and their demands to hold accountable those responsible for a disaster.
Few of the cabinets have already communicated about their resignation on Sunday and the PM announced it on Monday. President has accepted the government resignation. Therefore this resignation is leading to the need for forming a new government.
Thousands of protestors have come on the road against the mismanagement of the government. “The government resignation is not enough. “We have to bring down the president and the speaker of Parliament. It’s a matter of days, and we’ll do it,” said one of the protestors.
August 4 will be remembered as a black day in the history of Lebanon. A massive explosion took place on the port of Beirut, Lebanon. Over 2750 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate was stored at the port since 2013.
