Home » News » Lok Sabha Passes Constitution Amendment Bill to Extend SC-ST Quota


On 10 December, Lok Sabha passed a constitution amendment bill which enhances the reservation for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes for a further 10 years in the legislatures.

The bill was passed with all the 352 members in favor of it.

Previously, the reservation is given for the past 70 years in Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies for SC, ST and Anglo-Indians were due to end on 25 January 2020. Following the above Constitution (126th amendment) Bill 2019, the reservation is intended to extend for another 10 years, which is till 25 January 2030.

Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad proclaimed that the quota in legislatures was required to build a new political leadership of the two communities.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who was present in the Lok Sabha session expressed his delight in this regard.

“I am overjoyed on the unanimous passage of The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Sixth Amendment) Bill, 2019 that extends SC/ST reservations for ten more years,” said PM Modi on Twitter.
