Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to regulate the online classes hours properly to avoid compromising the health of the children with an irregular schedule. The court sought state government’s reply by July 27.

“Asserting that health of children cannot be compromised by forcing them to attend long hours of online classes, ” said Madras High Court.

Madras HC bench comprising of Justice M M Sundresh and Justice R Hemalatha stated that the centre has issued guidelines, but they are only advisory in nature. Therefore the Tamil Nadu government should come out with appropriate norms on online classes for children.

The directions were issued while hearing the multiple petitions filed by the parents of the students seeking restrictions on conducting the online classes or regulating these online classes properly in order to manage the time spent by children.

“All educational institutions under the guise of imparting education even during this pandemic at the ease of home, in the name of online classes are pushing young students to great mental and physical suffering, ” stated the petition.

The petitioner also mentioned, “It is well established by ophthalmologists and doctors worldwide that continuous viewing of mobile phones is hazardous to eyes, as a result of which there is every possibility of young, growing children to have impaired vision.”
