Madurai bench of Madras High Court has issued the directions to remove the teaser of an upcoming Tamil movie ‘Irandam Kutthu’ from all the social media platforms following the allegations that the teaser contains vulgar and obscene content.
The bench comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice B Pugalendhi has passed the interim order for the removal and has adjourned the matter to December 3.
The decision came on public interest litigation filed by Laxmi of Madurai against the movie release and had sought the directions to remove the teaser. The petition stated that the movie content could be a threat to the safety of children, especially when they are extremely exposed to such content on the internet. She had sought a ban on the release of a movie under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
“When there is already an increase in crime against women and children, movies that lack ‘decency’ and ‘morality’ would only aggravate the same,” the bench said. The bench has refused to ban the movie stating that it is the duty of certification authorities.
The court was informed that the movie was given an “A” certificate by the Censor Board after 32 cuts. The bench has sought a reply from Tamil Nadu’s Home Secretary, Information Technology department secretary, Censor Board officer, Director General of Police, and the film’s director, Santhosh P Jayakumar.
