Vinay Sharma, the convict in the gruesome Nirbhaya gangrape case, solicit an immediate withdrawal of his mercy petition, claiming that it was sent without his consent.

The convict, through his counsel AP Singh wrote to the President – Ram Nath Kovind, alleging that he has neither signed nor authorized the mercy petition. Further, he claimed that the petition was sent by the Tihar jail authorities and stated that it was a conspiracy as he is yet to file a curative petition.

The mercy petition was dismissed by the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court earlier on December 1.

On 16 December 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was gang-raped and tortured in a moving bus by six persons in South Delhi. Later, she succumbed to her injuries in Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. All the six accused were convicted of sexual assault and murder.

One of the convicts who was a minor, appeared before the Juvenile Justice Court while the other committed suicide in Tihar jail. In December 2018, the victim’s parents approached the court to fast-track the procedure to hang all four convicts. “I have been running from pillar to post for the last 7 years to get justice in the Nirbhaya case. I appeal to the justice system of this country and the government that Nirbhaya’s culprits must be hanged to death at the earliest,” said Nirbhaya’s mother.
