A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on 6 January by a person named Varaaki, seeking removal of Mamata Banerjee as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. The petition sought a direction to the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to discard Mamta for her remarks on demanding the UN-monitored referendum on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The petition contended that the oath of office under schedule III of the Constitution of India mandates the Chief Minister not to make any statement against the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
In December 2019, amid massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Mamata challenged the BJP government, calling for a UN-conducted referendum across the country on CAA and NRC. She further prompted that the Narendra Modi government would have to resign if the people rejected both.
“If you have the guts, let there be a referendum across the country and let there be an impartial organization like the United Nations or the Human Rights Commission form a committee to see how many people are in favor of or against the Citizenship Amendment Act,” she said while addressing a Trinamool Congress protest meeting against CAA and NRC in Kolkata.
‘Pained and hurt’ by her controversial statements on CAA and NRC the West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar appealed to the Chief Minister to withdraw her comment.
