On Tuesday, the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of farm laws until further orders. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde has also set up a four-member committee to break the deadlock between farmers and the Centre while citing that it will form the committee despite objection by farmer union leaders.
“We are forming a committee so that we have a clearer picture. We don’t want to hear arguments that farmers will not go to the committee. We are looking to solve the problem,” CJI told the lawyers representing farmers. He further added that they can’t reject the committee as it is a judicial process and the bench wants to resolve the issues.
The CJI asserted that someone ‘knowledgeable’ and ‘sensible’ will head the panel. A five-member committee will be formed with Harsimran Mann of Bhartiya Kisan Union, Ashok Gulati academician, and two others, the SC ordered. “This committee will be for us. All of you people who are expected to solve the issue will go before this committee. It will not pass an order or punish you; it will only submit a report to us,” CJI further added
“The committee is part of the judicial process in this case. We are planning to suspend the laws but not indefinitely. This is not politics. There is a difference between politics and judiciary and you will have to cooperate,” said SC to farmer unions while asserting that those who “genuinely want resolution, will go to the committee” on-farm laws.
