Ministry of External Affairs has summoned the High Commissioner of Canada warned that the comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could have a seriously damaging impact on ties between India and Canada.
MEA in the warning issued stated that the Canadian envoy was informed that the comments by the Canadian Prime Minister, Members of Parliament, and some Cabinet Ministers in connection to the issues raised by Indian farmers constitute unacceptable interference in our internal affairs.
“Such actions, if continued, would have a seriously damaging impact on ties between India and Canada,” said the statement.
On the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on Monday, Trudeau talked about the farmers’ protests in India. While expressing his concern about the agitation in India, he stated that his country would always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protest.
He further added, “We’re all very worried about family and friends. We believe in the importance of dialogue and that’s why we’ve reached out through multiple means directly to the Indian authorities to highlight our concerns.”
In the summon issued, MEA stated that such comments have encouraged the gatherings of extremist activities before High Commission and Consulates in Canada, leading to safety and security risks.
“We expect the Canadian Government to ensure the fullest security of Indian diplomatic personnel and its political leaders to refrain from pronouncements that legitimize extremist activism,” stated the summon.
The farmers have been protesting for the past few days against the three agriculture laws that have been passed recently by the Centre government. The farmers from across the country had given a call for “Delhi Chalo” to protest in the national capital.
