Bondita Bora, a teacher of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Assam’s Jorhat district, was suspended through a notice dated 24 December, for allegedly taking part in anti-CAA protests.
The government of Assam issued an order to the Elementary Education Department seeking to refrain its employees from posting political content on social media. Subsequently, the Director of Elementary Education warned its permanent and contractual employees of disciplinary action if they were found indulging in ‘political activities on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram among others. He further issued Bora a suspension order.

As per the officials, Bora instigated the students to take part in the anti-CAA protests and was involved in “unauthorized participation” between December 10 and 16.
Following her suspension order, Bora stated that “I have done nothing wrong by taking part in the protests. I am an Assamese and I will always stand for my motherland. I do not mind losing my job for agitating against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.”
Educationists, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and several other organizations had condemned the order and termed the suspension of the teacher, an attempt by the government to suppress the anti- CAA movement in the state.
