President Ram Nath Kovind has signed off on the appointment of Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India. He will be sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April 23 after the retirement of incumbent CJI, Sharad Arvind Bobde and will take over as next CJI on April 24.
Outgoing CJI SA Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor keeping with convention and norms of seniority. He will be serving as the Chief Justice of India till August 26, 2022.
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, The President is pleased to appoint Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief justice of India with effect from April 24,” said an official statement from Centre.
Justice Ramana was born in an agricultural family on August 27, 1957, in Ponnavaram village of Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district. He enrolled as an advocate on February 10, 1983.
Justice Ramana was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He also served as acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh HC from March 10, 2013, to May 20, 2013.
On September 2, 2013, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and then elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.
Recently, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had written a letter to CJI Bobde where he had complained against Justice Ramana in connection to the Amaravathi land scam.
Following an in-house procedure to examine the allegations, the Supreme Court dismissed the same.
