A 70-year-old man was mercilessly abused and thrashed on the road after his walking stick reportedly touched and left a scratch on a new SUV in Panchkula, Haryana. The city police has arrested the accused Manoj Kumar.

The police has taken suo moto cognizance for the inhuman behaviour against the senior citizen. The accused Manoj Kumar has been booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), Section 294 (obscene acts), and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Reg. video on social media in which there was violence and misbehaviour with a senior citizen in Sector 11 Panchkula, police has registered a case and arrested the accused. Strictest action shall be taken against him as per law,” tweeted Panchkula police with a picture of the accused.

In another tweet, the Twitter handle Commissionerate of Panchkula stated, “The accused is an insurance surveyor. For this criminal act, the police will also write to the insurance regulator IRDA to take appropriate action.”

The incident took place on Monday in Sector 11 Panchkula but was reported on Thursday by the victim’s son. The victim, Ram Sarup Kalra, submitted his complaint on Friday. The victim’s family submitted that Kalra was traumatized and didn’t share the incident with them. They came to know about the incident after watching a forwarded WhatsApp video.

I signaled the driver to slow down since I had to take a turn towards my home and the space on the street was narrow with a car parked on one side. However, the driver did not slow down and hit my foot and I eventually fell down. After hitting me, the driver came out of the car and threatened me with a sharp object. I got scared. The suspect picked my walking stick and started beating me up mercilessly with it. He kept on abusing and thrashing me. Local residents came to my rescue. Some senior citizens asked the man not to beat me up. He threatened to eliminate me if was seen around that street or park again. He also threatened me against reporting the matter to the police,” submitted Kalra.
