Supreme Court on Friday, has rejected a plea seeking constitution of a three-judge committee to inquire into the former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi conduct at the position of judge in the top court. Ranjan Gogoi is a Rajya Sabha MP now.
Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, also comprising of Justice B R Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari considered the PIL “infructuous” as he has left the office already and the petitioner has not pressed for any hearing in the recent two years.
“Why did not you (petitioner) press it for hearing in the last two years? This plea has become infructuous as he has demitted office,” stated the bench.
Arun Ramchandra Hublikar had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking into the alleged omission and commission by former judge Ranjan Gogoi and denied entertaining the plea.
The petitioner Hublikar has claimed that he had approached the secretary-general of the top court in context to listing the plea which was not done. He had filed the petition in 2018. He also stated that despite several reminder letters, the registry has not listed the matter.
Justice Gogoi was sworn as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, and has retired in November 2019. His tenure was filled with various controversies and allegations including sexual harassment among others.
