As schools in Karnataka reopened after five days, students were denied entry in the schools in Shimoga and Udupi for wearing the hijab. Reportedly, parents can be seen requesting the teachers to let the children enter into the classroom and then they can take off their hijab.

On February 10, Karnataka High Court had directed students to avoid wearing religious clothing till further orders.

Some of the students removed their hijab to enter the class while some refused to remove it and turned back from the gate.

Students were asked to remove the hijab at Women’s Government PU College, Udupi. In the viral videos, parents of the students were seen arguing with the teachers to let their children enter the school.

“Requesting (teachers) to allow students (to wear hijabs till they reach) classrooms… can be taken off after that… but they’re not allowing entry,” a news agency stated.

Teacher and women staff were also denied entry into Mandya school. They were asked to remove the hijab at the school gate.

Section 144 has been imposed around 200 metre radius of all High schools till February 19.

“Schools up to 10 standard will re-open from tomorrow. I’ve instructed the DCs, SPs and school administrations to conduct a peace committee meeting. Schools for higher classes and degree colleges will re-open after reviewing the situation,” Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday.
