While hearing a plea by a murder convict seeking bail, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde has made references of Krishna on the occasion of cultural festival Janamashtami. Bobde asked the convict that whether he wants a bail on the day when Lord Krishna was born in the jail.
Supreme Court was hearing a bail petition filed by Dharmendra Valvi who is convicted and awarded life imprisonment by trial court and Bombay High Court as well.
“You want bail or jail? Today Lord Krishna was born in jail. Do you want to leave jail?” asked CJI Sharad Arvind Bobde. The petitioner’s counsel has replied to the question affirmatively.
“Good. Religion is not something you are extremely attached to,” said SA Bobde and granted bail.
Dharmendra Valvi, a Congress I party member along with other five party members were convicted for the murder of an opposition party member from the BJP in 1994. They were convicted by a trial court and awarded life imprisonment. The ruling was upheld by the Bombay High court as well. Later Valvi approached the apex court and the case is pending before SC since 2018.
“During the pendency of the main appeal, the appellant, Dharmendra Valvi is directed to be released on bail on furnishing bail bonds in the sum of Rs 25,000 with two sureties of the like amount,” ruled the top court.
