The Delhi court had reserved its verdict for 16 December, against the expelled Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao gang-rape case. The district judge, Dharmesh Sharma who was designated by the Supreme Court to hold the trial in the case, will announce his judgment on the said date.
On 2 December, the Central Bureau of Investigation concluded its arguments and also recorded the in-camera statements of the defense witnesses.
The case refers to a 17-year-old minor girl being gang-raped by Sengar on 4 June 2017 in Unnao when the girl approached him seeking assistance for employment. Sengar, his brother and his co-assailants framed the victim’s father as the perpetrator, who later died in the judicial custody.
On 28 July 2019, the victim’s car was rammed by a truck while on their way to Rae Bareli jail, leading to the death of two of the victim’s aunts.
Senger, the main accused was arrested on 13 April 2018 following the order of the Allahabad High Court in the case. He was booked under the POCSO Act and was convicted of rape, murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation. In August 2019, after a massive public and political outrage, the BJP government expelled him from the party.
