Delhi police has revealed that Youtuber Gaurav Wasan and his wife received Rs 4.5 lakh in their accounts as a donation towards a needy food stall owner Kanta Prasad and transferred the money only after a complaint was lodged against him. The police is likely to file a chargesheet against Gaurav soon.
Recently, Kanta Prasad had apologized to Gaurav. However, he refused to withdraw his complaint against the Youtuber.
On Thursday, Baba Ka Dhaba Owner Kanta Prasad was admitted to ICU at Safdarjung hospital following an alleged suicide bid. He was brought to the hospital in unconscious condition after police received a PCR call. He had consumed sleeping pills and alcohol.
Who is Kanta Prasad?
80-year old Kanta Prasad who shot to fame after a video of food blogger and Youtuber, Gaurav Wasan went viral last year. The video moved netizens after listening to the plight of Kanta Prasad and his wife, Badami Devi as they were struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. He was about to close his 30-year-old food stall, Baba Ka Dhaba in Malviya Nagar, Delhi.
The video was shared by millions of people. The food stall owner was showered with financial support from all over the country. As he started earning well, he opened a new restaurant. But he moved to his old stall after an unsuccessful stint as a restaupreneur.
Who is Gaurav Wasan?
Famous Youtuber Gaurav Wasan runs his social media handle under the name ‘Swaad Official’ with 728k subscribers on Youtube and 414k followers on Instagram. He shot a video of Baba Ka Dhaba and urged people to visit the eatery and support the elderly couple.
Complaint Against Gaurav Wasan
Kanta Prasad filed a complaint against Gaurav Wasan under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of Indian Penal Code. He accused Gaurav Wasan of misappropriating funds, cheating, mischief, criminal breach of trust, and criminal conspiracy. Kanta Prasad had allegedly received 42 lakh as help.
“YouTuber Gaurav Wasan intentionally and deliberately shared only his and his family/friends bank details and mobile numbers with the donors and collected huge amount of donation through different mode of payments i.e bank account/wallets without providing any information to the complainant,” the complaint said.
“I don’t get a lot of customers now; most people come here to take selfies… Earlier I was earning over Rs 10,000 per day, now it’s Rs 3,000-Rs 5,000,” Kanta Prasad said in an interview.
Criticism Over Defaming Gaurav Wasan
Kanta Prasad was criticised for his attitude towards a helping hand, Gaurav Wasan who helped him rise above the crisis by getting more customers and financial support. Another video of him went viral in which he can be heard saying that we did not ask for help, he came and shot the video.
But when he moved back to the old food stall, he apologised and said, “Gaurav Wasan, woh ladka koi chor nahi tha, na usko humne kabhi chor kahan hai (Gaurav Wasan was not a thief neither did we call him that).”
